5 Photography Tips for NOT BORING Headshots

Headshots are kind of inevitable when it comes to working in the real-world–you’ll most likely have to take one at some point in your life. If you are a new or current photographer, here are some tips to spice up headshots and make them stand out more!

1. Be creative with the wardrobe

As headshots are taken throughout many professions, have the clothing being worn by the subject reflect on the person's profession to make a statement. For example, if they are a doctor they may wear a lab coat, but if they are a lawyer, they may wear something more business-professional.

Deciding on what the subject is going to wear isn’t always in the hands of the photographer, but you could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the headshots by providing input if asked!

2. Create separation from the background

Whether your subject is standing in front of a wall or a building, make sure to create separation so they aren’t right up against the background.

Creating separation not only creates depth in the background, but it makes the photo or headshot more visually appealing.

Now all you need to do is find a backdrop or background of your choice!

3. Silly faces should make an appearance

Headshots and professional photos in general can be very nerve wracking for most people–so let’s shake it up!

By asking for silly or funny faces from the subject, it can make them feel more at ease and less tense, which is exactly what you, the photographer, wants. It’s very rare you will find someone that won’t make a funny face when asked, but don’t fret if you run into a subject like that.

4. Create a fun atmosphere

Boring photoshoots are never something to look forward to, so as the photographer, bring the energy and fun!

You now know you should ask your subject to make a silly face to break the tension, but what are other ways to make a shoot more enjoyable?

Having a fun music playlist made or snacks out on set will lighten up the mood tremendously!

5. Encourage subjects through words

Encouragement and positivity through words is what almost every person getting their pictures taken wants to hear.

Although your subject may look tense through the lens, encourage them that they are doing a great job and it may help them relax a little bit. Telling them straight up that they aren’t doing something right may make them put up an even bigger wall, so start with positivity first!
